Ek Zuban 2005: Bi-lingual pamphlet which
includes work by Finnish poet Esa Hirvonen. These poems
explore the legacy of growing up with an alcoholic father.
I’d written about him before in As If but wanted to
get deeper in.
These are very personal poems and I wanted
to find a way to make that easier on myself and people who
came to readings – so with the help of Simon James
my teccy friend, I put together a set of images and bits
of music to accompany a sequence of them. Then this was
projected at readings and I read in the spaces. It was really
exciting to do and added a new dimension to the work –
for example, found an actual recording of some Lancaster
bomber crew talking which I added in as an intro. Just amazing
to hear those young men’s voices with that unmistakable
(terrifying) drone. You can download an audio version –
sound effects, music and me reading the poems here
and play it on your media player.
